冒頭、針を落としてすぐ、１曲目の「ムスターファ」でイントロの音がしょぼく、購入を後悔した瞬間があったが、途中でガツンとしたバンドサウンドに切り替わり、曲の展開を演出している。
アルバムのタイトルは「JAZZ」であるが、いわゆる音楽のジャンルとしての「JAZZ」ではなく、前編にわたり幅広い世界観を感じるサウンドが響いている。
「JAZZ」という言葉の意味は、諸説あるそうだが、「活気づける、にぎやかにする、華やかにする、飾り付ける、多彩にする」から転じて音楽ジャンルの名詞になっていると解釈しているが、このアルバムを聴いていると、「QueenにとってのJAZZとはこういう音楽だ」と言われているような気がする。
いろんな音楽を聴いてきているが、ミュージシャンにとって、「ジャンル」というものはそれほど重要なことではないのかもしれないと思う作品がいくつもある。このアルバムも、ジャンルというリスナーの固定概念に対して挑戦的で、ただただリスナーの心を「活気づける、にぎやかにする、華やかにする、飾り付ける、多彩にする」ことを追究した作品の一つとして、筆者の心に刻まれている。
